Course Description

IELTS General Training is an internationally recognized English test designed for people who are going to English‐speaking countries for work, non-degree level study, or migration. It assesses everyday communication skills needed in social and workplace environments.

Who Should Take This Course?

You should choose IELTS General if you:

  • Are moving or immigrating to an English-speaking country.
  • Need English for work or workplace training settings.
  • Intend to study at below-degree level.
  • Want to improve your practical everyday English: interacting in social situations, understanding everyday texts, writing letters/emails, speaking on familiar topics.

Test Format & Timing

The General Training version covers all four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Total time is approximately 2 hours 45 minutes for Listening + Reading + Writing; Speaking takes an additional ~11-14 minutes.

Here is a breakdown:

Task 2 – Write an essay (≈ 250 words), responding to a view, argument, or problem. Topics are of general interest.
Speaking~11-14 minutesFace-to-face interview: introduction & questions on familiar topics (hometown, personal experience, interests), a short speaking turn on a given topic with 1 minute to prepare, followed by further questions. The aim is to test fluency, ability to express opinions, clarity, grammatical range, vocabulary, and pronunciation.

What Skills Are Tested & What to Expect

  • Listening Skills: Understanding gist and detailed information, following conversations/monologues, identifying opinions/attitudes, understanding the purpose of what is said.
  • Reading Skills: Skimming, scanning, reading for detail, understanding implied meaning; identifying writers’ opinions, purpose, attitude; handling different text types (everyday, workplace, general interest).
  • Writing Skills: Production of letters in appropriate style/register; essays that present ideas clearly and coherently; ability to support opinions, organise arguments, use suitable vocabulary & grammar.
  • Speaking Skills: Being comfortable talking about familiar topics; developing ideas when prompted; expressing opinions; maintaining fluency; using a range of vocabulary; clear pronunciation.

Scoring & What You’ll Gain

  • Each section is scored on the 1-9 band scale; final score is the average of all four.
  • You will become much more confident in using English in everyday real-life and work situations.
  • You’ll gain familiarity with the test format, time management, strategies for each section.
  • Improvement not just in test performance, but in practical communication: letters, reading notices/brochures, speaking in meetings, workplace contexts, etc.
